WhatsApp is one of the best and fastest messaging application software in the world with over 1.2 billion monthly active users. Ever since it's creation in the year 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum former employees of Yahoo, WhatsApp has been embraced by people all over the world even before the encryption features were added to it. And as of this moment, the number of users on WhatsApp increases on daily basis

In 2014 when the ownership of WhatsApp was transferred from Brian Acton and Jan Koum to Mark Zuckerberg (the founder of Facebook) for $19.3 billion, a lot of people were intrigued as to what makes a free messaging app to be so valuable such that the worth was pegged at $19.3 billion.

Subsequently after the owner of Facebook "Mark Zuckerberg" acquired WhatsApp, many people presumed that the acquisition of WhatsApp by Mark will change how WhatsApp works, perhaps WhatsApp will start showing ads on users profile or as a pop-up notification. But that wasn't the case, Mark Zuckerberg understands the behaviors of social media users, he knew that most people get irritated by the display of notification ads or sticky ads. Therefore WhatsApp adopted two different alternative measures for monetizing the free messaging app. NOTE: "This is based on personal perception and ideas gotten from external sources"
Here is how WhatsApp owner makes money ...

•Behavioral Marketing
As it can be inferred from the name, behavioral marketing is a business concept whereby advertisements are targeted towards costumers who are most likely to show interest in the adverts. In other words, the advertisements are displayed based on the records of users behavior on a web platform rather than the contents of a web page.

A few years back, advertisers used to place ads on billboards and on TV of which 50% of those who saw the adverts may not be interested in what the advert is all about, 30% of those who saw the ads may not be ready to buy the content of the adverts, while the remaining 20% may have interest in the adverts and also have the money to patronize what's being displayed on the adverts. Therefore, the advertiser will losses 80% of the viewers. But with behavioral marketing, advertising companies will help you to reach only those who are interested in whatever you are selling. Here is a clear picture of how Behavioral marketing works:

On the 30th of September 2017, I shared a post on a WhatsApp group about Bitcoin cryptocurrency.

Few days after sharing the post on WhatsApp, I started seeing adverts that are related to the same post which I shared with the group. Whenever I open chrome browser, or any web page online, I always see adverts about bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

Well, the answer is simple, WhatsApp makes money by sharing WhatsApp users behavior to an advertising company,  in the sense that when next you inquire about something online, those advertising companies will serve you adverts based on your WhatsApp behavior.

•Customer Care Services
In a post published by UK Telegraph on the 5th of September 2017, it was said that WhatsApp plans on monetizing its 1.2billion users by allowing companies to do transactions and offer services to their customers through WhatsApp messenger.

This way, mobile telecom companies, airlines, banks and so on, will be able to access and engage directly with their customers via the WhatsApp platform. However, this feature won't be available for large scale businesses alone, it is believed that small-scale businesses will also be able to enjoy this new feature which has been planned for implementation before the year 2020.

Tentatively, Behavioural marketing and customer care services are the two presumably ways on how WhatsApp owner makes money.
